Washington March 23. 1860.
My dear Willie,
I have turned Mr Danforths
Unknown
proposition over and over in my
mind, and I cannot continue
now to advance money to him
with the knowledge that he is to
use it, not to build with but
to pay debts, without giving grounds
for the ultimate allegation that
I am making an usurious loan.
I abhor the practice of usury
as much as I do the name of it.
He may confer, with Mr
Day
Birth: 1817-02-23 Death: 1878-02-28
, or Mr Pomeroy
Birth: 1824-12-31 Death: 1905-03-23
,
on the subject, and if either of these gentlemen
will find out a plan by which
I can make the advances and
secure ^sale of^ the lots with their improve-
ment, without practicing usury I
will at once adopt it
I send you his letter
that you may have the whole
matter to lay before Mr Day
or Mr Pomeroy.
Affectionately
William H Seward
William H. Seward
Mr
William H. Seward Junior
