My Dear Uncle,
I see not how the Trustees of
Union College, notwithstanding that Mr Blatchford
Birth: 1820-03-09 Death: 1893-07-07
is one of them, should have discovered the hidden
merit of one so modest as I claim to be, except by
looking through some glass which your kindness
must have furnished. And I beg to present my
acknowledgments for such service.
It seems to enhance my estimates of this
token of your favor that it will be associated
alway with the recollection of the peculiar circum-
stances under which, after a long interval, I
met you recently at Auburn.
It is sure that I should say
to you that with steadfast purpose, which my ability
can by no means equal, I shall endeavor to sustain
a name upon which has now been conferred the
highest title that Colleges bestow on my profession:
and a title conferred in this instance, chiefly
(with much propriety exclusively) because the
name already had been made honorable in
other departments of useful life.
That this communication has been
delayed by a short absence from home and sub-
sequently, by indisposition which disabled me, has
occasioned me some annoyance. But the delay
is, in some measure, compensated by the opportunity
which it affords of offering my congratulations in
view of the recent most favorable reports of your
own improved condition and of Frederick’s

constantprogress in a hopeful direction. To my former
prayers for your recovery I may now add the
expression of earnest hope that a kind Providence
may grant you exemption from further calamity,
and bestow larger comforts as years are multiplied.
