Dear Sir The letter of Mr Draper
with a line from you in connexion is received.
I can assure you the report or assertion is false. There is
not the least shade of truth in the matter.
The R. V. Statutes make it the duty of Surrogates
to enter their costs in a book kept for that purpose
without compensation. I permitted Booth
in the office & write them out. He has also decrees
to write in 3 or 4 cases in which he had taken
the testimony before his term of Office had expired – and
those decrees were recorded by Mr Horace Sweezy
is in the office with me) but who was paid for
those services by Booth.
Mr Draper or any other Friend would
much oblige me by letting me know who takes the
responsibility of making so false a charge. I will
venture to predict he is not a good Whig nor a friend
of yours. As Benton
pointment of Surrogate he can inform you upon
the Subject. We have some Whigs in this County &
in the City of New York who find fault with every-
thing done by our friends in Albany. My opponents
Eager
Spring for town offices and both defeated. The Whig
Ticket in NewBurgh succeeded with all the important
offices except Eager the great sympathy for him soon van-
ished. You know that both yourself &
