Appears to be written in the hand of William Henry Seward’s secretary, Samuel Blatchford To. M.D.Canfield Esqr. New Jersey.
Albany April 9th 1839.
My dear brother,
I have just returned from a very brief stay (a single day)
at Florida. I found my parents about as I anticipated. I had some melanch-
oly moments with my dear mother
of resignation, by the loss of her only daughter
no more. The Spirit of my mother is broken. Heaven bless and comfort her
the few moments she is to be spared to us. I had some conversation with my
father. But time failed us to discuss the
subject fully, and it was postponed until I shall visit him again and more
at leisure after our Legislature shall have adjourned. The adjournment will
take place about the last of this month.
Affectionately your brother,
William H. Seward.
