Biography:
Mary Tyler Peabody Mann was a writer, educator, and translator. In the late 1820s and early 1830s, Mary and her sister Elizabeth moved to Boston to teach and there met Horace Mann, whom Mary married in 1843. By the time of her marriage in 1843, Mary was an experience with a repertoire of original methods, many of which featured the outdoors. However, after her marriage, Mary gave up teaching except to homeschool her three sons. Instead, she assisted her husband in correspondence during his three terms as a member of the House of Representatives and also supported schools that Horace started as the first secretary of the state board of education.
