Editorial Note
On board the Macedonian.
We have left the land out of sight, and so I have
closed my eyes on Palestine probably on Asia forever.
Thus far I am retracing my outward track. I cannot
know ^now^ whether I shall be obliged to hurry through
the Mediterranean or shall have leave to vary my
^returning^ route homeward – but I expect to be with you next winter.
I am impatient for letters, but cant meet them until I
reach Florence. My health is good – I trust to be
at Alexandria tomorrow, and at that place to be able to
designate my route homeward. It is a pleasant reflection
that 150 miles are already taken off from the 5000 miles
that intervened between my furthest stage and my home.
