I have a letter
from Gen. Ord
Birth: 1818-10-18 Death: 1883-07-22
this morning
from the contents of which I
infer that he desires the
appointment of Maj. ^Brig.^ Gen.
in the regular army, and
wishes you to understand if
the matter comes before you
that he is and has been a
firm supporter of the Pres-
ident's

policy — I am under
so many obligations to
Gen. Ord for kindness and
and courtesy, and feel so lively
an interest in his welfare.
I must beg you will forgive
me for troubling you with
this piece of information. I
hope it may guide you if
this question should arise —
With love for all the
family. I am
Very Respectfully
