My Dearest Frances,
I have (since my former note
of this date) received a letter from
Professor Bache
Birth: 1806-07-19 Death: 1867-02-17
who says
“Immediately on the receipt of
your note of the 14th I addressed
the Department with a view to retain
if possible the services of Lieut Seward
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
for another season. The issue of my
request will be known within a
week and I will communicate it
to you without delay. I hope it may
be favorable."
Notwithstanding this I shall
proceed this afternoon to Philadel-
phia— & consult there the friends

A day or two here next week will be
needed in relation to other business, and
then I shall probably go to Goshen
hoping to be with you on Saturday
of next week.
The political excitement here
has subsided, and I am quite a
harmless person.
