Louis Blenker

Biography
Louis Blenker was born on May 12, 1812, in Worms, Germany. He joined the military at age 20, serving in Europe and during the German revolution of 1848. He immigrated to America in 1849, establishing a business in New York City. When the American Civil War began, Colonel Blenker organized the Eighth New York Infantry comprised of German-Americans. He was promoted to Brigadier General after the first Battle of Bull Run. In 1862, he was relieved of duty to return to Washington, DC. He died of battle injuries in October 1863 and is buried in Rockland Cemetery.
