Friend of WSJ. Enrolled at Harvard in 1860, but left in 1861 to join Union Army. Brother of Union Generals William and David Birney and politician James Birney. First lieutenant of 23rd PA Volunteer Infantry, then promoted to Captain and Major. Died of pneumonia.
