Biography
LeGrand Bouton Cannon was born November 1, 1815, in New York City to LeGrand and Esther Bouton Cannon. Cannon graduated from Rensselaer and started a business in New York City. In 1838, he joined the staff of Major General Wool in the Canadian Rebellion. As the Civil War began, Colonel Cannon joined General Wool as his Chief of Staff. In his civilian life, Cannon was involved in development of railroads, canals, and steamboats. He organized the preservation of the burial site of Abolitionist John Brown. Later in life, Cannon wrote Personal Reminiscences of the Rebellion 1861-1866, which told of his advisory role to President Lincoln and others. Colonel Cannon died November 3, 1906 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, New York.
