Biography

Louis Hasbrouck was born at Guilford, Ulter County on April 22, 1777. He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Bevier) Hasbrouck. He married Catherine Banks, daughter of Justus and Catherine (Graham) Banks who was born Sept 13, 1777 in Ulster. The marriage took place on December 29, 1802 in New Paltz, New York where he was making his home.

Louis Hasbrouck was one of the first men to settle in Ogdensburg. St. Lawrence county was formally organized March 3, 1802 and the town of Oswegatchie was incorporated on the same date. Louis Hasbrouck was appointed the first St Lawrence County Clerk on March 10, 1802. He held the office until June 1811, and then again from March 1813 to March 1817. He was also the first postmaster in Ogdensburg from April 1, 1807 until 1829. On his first trip to St. Lawrence county he traveled by horseback through the Mohawk and Black River countries. He spent his summers in Ogdensburg and the winters at his home in New Paltz. He moved permanently to Ogdensburg in 1804. He took with him his wife, his brother Joseph, a lady cousin and a female slave.

Louis Hasbrouck was a lawyer by trade. He graduated from Nassau Hall in Princeton New Jersey on September 25, 1797 and then studied law in New York. In August 1801 he was admitted at Albany to practice in the Supreme Court.
