Robert Thompson is listed in the 1860 U.S. Census as a black man born in Cuba, aged 30, who was working as a waiter in Canandaigua, New York.  He is also listed in the 1860 U.S. Census for the City of New York, NY, place of birth Havana, Cuba, working as a waiter. He was married to a woman named Jane and the couple had two children, Evelina and John Francis. Henry Onderdonk Chesebro references a Robert Thompson, who used to be in his family's employ, working as a head waiter for the Metropolitan City Hotel in New York City, New York, in a letter he drafted to William H. Seward, dated January 26, 1864. He asks Seward to help Thompson acquire a position in Washington, DC.
