Person Information

Biography

Judson Hutchinson was a member of The Hutchinson Family, an American singing group of the mid-nineteenth century. They were a quartet, composed of three brothers John, Judson, and Asa, and their youngest sister, Abby. Abby departed from the group in 1849, which decreased the groups popularity, although they still continued to perform and sing into the '50s and possibly even the '60s. While originally their repertoire was conventional melodramatic songs, their contacts and strong political beliefs led to later works confronting social issues such as woman suffrage, temperance, abolition, and more.
