Biography
He was the U.S. representative for Maryland and later became the Secretary of the Navy under President Filmore's administration. Before entering politics, he was a known author under the pen name of Mark Littletown with "Swallow Barn" being his most famous work. After becoming a statesmen, he strongly advocated for the end of slavery for his state of Maryland. In one of the Seward letters, he is mentioned along with several other representatives to be discussing Civil War battles at dinner.
