Biography
"US Congressman, Jurist. While a member of the New York State Assembly in 1820, he was elected to the US House of Representatives and served one term. Ruggles then went on to a distinguished career in the New York state judiciary. He was originally interred at Christ Church (Episcopal) Cemetery. In 1888 all the remains at this burying ground were removed to Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery." and "Born in New Milford, Litchfield County, Conn., February 10, 1789. Member of New York state assembly from Sullivan and Ulster counties, 1819-20; U.S. Representative from New York 7th District, 1821-23; state court judge in New York, 1839-46; delegate to New York state constitutional convention, 1846; judge of New York Court of Appeals, 1847-55; chief judge of New York Court of Appeals, 1851-53. Died in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, N.Y., June 16, 1865 (age 76 years, 126 days)." Brother of David Ruggles (not the abolitionist) who married Sarah Colden.
