Frederick F. Backus was a Rochester physician.  He served as Rochester's State Senator from 1844 to 1847.  Backus is mentioned in a letter from B.J. Seward to Frances Seward [18390213BJS_FMS].  BJS suggests that Dr. Cummings might "take Dr. Backus practice, who has closed his house & I believe ton to N.Y."
