Biography
John Nichol was a professor at the University of Glasgow, a literary scholar, and writer.
In 1861 he married Jane Stuart Bell, with whom he had three children.
In 1862 he was elected the new regius Chair of English literature at the University of Glasgow. In 1865 he visited the United States, which influenced him to write "American Literature" in 1882. He also helped found the New Speculative Society.
