Biography
Henry Heth was a member of the West Point Class of 1847 and Augustus Seward's first roommate. The boys were however split up in their second semester at the academy due to both having a high number of demerits. Heth fondly remembered Gus in his memoirs and comments how he was well liked by his classmates. Heth graduated last in class of 1847 which numbered 38 cadets, four behind Gus who graduated 34th in the class. He served during the Mexican War and on the frontier rising to the rank of Captain, and author a manual on marksmanship for the army in 1858. With the outbreak of the Civil War he resigned his commission in the United States Army and joined the Confederate Army.
