Biography

From 1818 to 1820, George McDuffie served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and later a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1821 to 1834. During his time as Governor, 1834-1836, he supported nullification and state's rights. He was a slave holder and believed southerners could, and should, hold slaves. In an 1835 speech he declared, "No human institution, in my opinion, is more manifestly consistent with the will of God, than domestic slavery." He later served as a U.S. District Court Judge and a member of the U.S. State Senate.
