Mangle Minthorne, who was born Mangle Minthorne Thompson but dropped his surname, was born to Arietta Minthorne Thompkins and Gilbert Livingston Thompson. During the Mexican War, he served as third assistant engineer aboard Commodore Matthew C. Perry's ship, the Mississippi. He was the chief engineer on the Fulton, a fact also mentioned in 18631229CAS_TxW. He married Silvie Livingston Wotton who was the ship's captain's daughter. His one son, Wotton Minthorne Thompson also never used his legal last name. Mangle Minthorne died while working on the Fulton in South Carolina.
