Adelia and John's marriage was not approved by her father and her father created a scene at her wedding in which FMS describes in a 1838 letter to LMW: "he rushed in with a club for the purpose of dimolishing the bridegroom — they all ran but Hobart Bostwick who stood his ground and refused to obey Genung's command to leave the house whereupon Genung stuck him a blow in the face."
