Biography

John Sergeant was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied law at Princeton College and was admitted to the bar in 1799. He served as deputy attorney general for Philadelphia in 1800, member of the state house representative 1808-1810, and was elected to the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th,  20th , 25th, 26th, 27th Congresses. He also served as President of the Pennsylvania Board of Canal Commissioners and on the envoy to the Panama Congress in 1826.
