Biography:
Although Herman Boerhaave had intended to become a clergyman, he decided to first seek a doctorate in medicine, which he obtained at Harderwijk in 1693. In 1701 he was appointed lecturer in medicine at Leiden University, where, in 1709 he became professor of botany and medicine. In 1714 he was appointed professor of clinical medicine and elected Rector; and he was elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris and the Royal Society in London. He was a great teacher of medicine and a systematist at a time when a system was needed. He insisted on observation and careful analytic procedures.
