Biography

Sir Charles Bagot was born in England and attended Christ Church College, Oxford. He married Mary Charlotte Anne Wellesley Pole, with whom he had 10 children. In 1815 he was appointed minister plenipotentiary and envoy extraordinary to the United States.  He negotiated the Rush-Bagot agreement concerning naval forces on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. In 1841 he agreed to become the governor-in-chief of the recently united Canadas (upper and lower). He laid the cornerstone on King's College in 1842. He was the first British statesman to bring Canadians into the government of their country.
