Biography
Charles 10th was the brother of Louis the 16th. Charles went into hiding during the French Revolution, and traveled to Austria, Prussia, Russia, and England until the Bourbon restoration in 1814. After Louis XVIII's death, Charles became King. He granted greater power to the clergy and imposed the death penalty for certain "sacrileges." He issued ordinances which were repressive, provoking revolution by the Paris radicals. He abdicated in favor of his grandson, however Louis=Philippe gained the crown.
