Biography
"JOHN S. CHAUNCEY was born in New York about 1800. He entered the navy in 1812, and in 1822 rendered excellent service, in command of the sloop Peacock, by capturing a fleet of pirates off the coast of Cuba. After departmental service from 1838, he commanded the Susquehanna in the Civil War. He was promoted to the rank of commodore in 1862; retired in April, 1869. He died in Brooklyn, New York, April 10, 1871."
