Biography

Thomas W. Sherman was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He graduated from West Point in 1836 and served in campaigns against the Seminoles and Cherokee Nation in Florida. He then fought in the Mexican-American War, distinguishing himself during the Battle of Buena Vista. During the Civil War, Sherman commanded ground forces in the Port Royal Expedition. He then briefly took command of the Office of the South, before being sent to the Western Theater, where he commanded forces during the Siege of Corinth and Siege of Port Hudson. At Port Hudson he was severely injured and his right leg amputated. After the war, he continued to serve until his retirement in 1870.
