Biography

Rev. Benjamin Hale was president of Geneva College from 1836-1858. He was born November 23, 1797 in Newburyport, MA.  He earned his bachelor of arts degree and masters degree from Bowdoin College, completing his studies in 1821. From 1827-1835, he was a professor of chemistry at Dartmouth College. When he arrived at Geneva College, the institution was suffering after a period of financial mismanagement. Hale’s leadership was credited with saving the school. He married Mary Caroline King in 1823 and they had seven children. He died July 15, 1863.

From 1823-1826, Hale was the first principal of the newly founded Gardiner Lyceum in Maine (noted as the first vocational trade school in the United States).
