Benjamin Hale

Biography
Rev. Benjamin Hale was president of Geneva College from 1836-1858. He was born November 23, 1797 in Newburyport, MA. He earned his bachelor of arts degree and masters degree from Bowdoin College, completing his studies in 1821. From 1827-1835, he was a professor of chemistry at Dartmouth College. When he arrived at Geneva College, the institution was suffering after a period of financial mismanagement. Hale’s leadership was credited with saving the school. He married Mary Caroline King in 1823 and they had seven children. He died July 15, 1863.
