Gaspar Tochman was born in Letowna, Poland. He attended the University of Warsaw, and after graduating he practiced law. He served s a major in the Polish army during the revolution against the Russians. After the Revolution failed he was exiled to France. In 1837 he immigrated to the United States. He lectured, wrote, and practiced law. In 1852 he settled in Virginia. In 1861 he applied for the appointment as US ambassador to France. When he did not receive this appointment he switched his allegiance to the Confederacy. He raised multiple "Polish" regiments for the Confederation, composed entirely of foreign-born men.
