Biography

Bailie Nicol Jarvie is a fictional character from Sir Walter Scott's novel Rob Roy. Jarvie is described as a "canny merchant and couthy, cautious urbanite who gets caught up in shenanigans in the Highlands." In 1872 there was a periodical in Glasgow The Bailie named after him, and fictionally edited by him. Individuals would write to the periodical addressing their letters to Bailie. There are also two buildings falsely associated with Bailie, his "house" and a tavern named after him, which Queen Victoria visited when she went to Glasgow in 1849.
