Biography
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was born in Lapa, Vera Cruz. In 1810 he entered the Spanish Vera Cruz battalion as a cadet. In 1829 he fought against Spain's attempt to reconquer Mexico. In 1833-36 he became President of Mexico. He fought against U.S. settlers in Texas in the 1836 rebellion and defeated Texan forces at the Alamo. In the battle of San Jacinto he was captured by General Samuel Houston. He later signed the treaty ending the war. He lost a leg trying to defend Veracruz from seizure by the French navy. He led his men against U.S. forces again in the beginning of the Mexican-American war. In 1847 he retired to Jamaica, and in 1853, to New Granada. Two years before he died, poor and blind, he returned to Mexico.
