Biography

Ira Curtis was a prominent citizen of Auburn and a friend of William Henry Seward. He played an active role in the Universalist Church and the wider Universalist community, serving as a leading member of the Universalist Society of Auburn, trustee and treasurer of the Cayuga Missionary Society, and agent for the Evangelical Magazine and Gospel Advocate. He also sold Universalist books. In 1847, Curtis served as a witness in People v. Freemason, the first case in the United States to use the insanity defense, for which William Henry Seward served as the lead defense lawyer. Upon his passing, William Henry Seward wrote a heartfelt letter to Curtis' wife, writing "I never knew among its members one more just, truthful, trustful, or benevolent man." The letter was published in multiple newspapers.
