Biography

"Thomas Hun, born in Albany, NY, was a member of the prominent Hun family which had strong ties with Albany Medical College and had been active in the College since its inception. His family was one of the founding families of Albany and remained influential in the city throughout the years. Thomas received his education at the Albany Academy and Union College. While at Union College, he and Amos Dean founded Kappa Alpha, the oldest undergraduate college fraternity in the United States. Thomas obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1830 following one year as an apprentice to Dr. Platt Williams in Albany. After graduation he spent a couple of years in Albany setting up a medical practice, followed by five years in Europe studying different diseases of the nervous system. Upon his return to Albany, he accepted the professorship of the Institutes of Medicine at Albany Medical College and became active in the Albany County Medical Society serving as President, as well as President of the New York State Medical Society. In 1875, following the death of Dr. Armsby, Dr. Hun was appointed Dean of Albany Medical College, and served in that position until his death in 1896."
