Biography
Charles Davies entered the U.S. military in 1813. In 1816 he became principal assistant professor of mathematics and natural and experiential philosophy at West Point. He became full professor in 1823, and held that office until May 1837 when he had to resign due to illness. He then held chair of mathematics in Trinity College, Conn. from 1839-1841. He was treasurer of the U.S. military academy from 1841-1846, and in 1848 became professor of mathematics and philosophy at the University of New York. He made a series of mathematical textbooks, from primary arithmetic to higher mathematics.
