Biography

Ethan Brand is a fictional character from Nathanial Hawthorne's story "Ethan Brand—A Chapter from an Abortive Romance." In the story, Ethan Brand is searching to find the "unpardonable sin," which he describes as "the only sin that deserves a recompense of immortal agony." After finding the unpardonable sin, Brand climbs into a furnace and is burned to death; the next day his skeleton is found as turned into lime.
