Biography

Nathan Canfield was born in NY and moved to Philadelphia where he is listed in the 1850 census as a merchant. It is very likely he is the "Mr Canfield" that meets with FMS and FAW during their 1849 travels in Philadelphia, because FMS describes "Mr Canfield a young merchant" and FAW mentions that he was from NY as he was the brother of Lucy Canfield Conger. FAW also explains that he boards at the Washington House and he is marked as a boarder in the 1850 census.
