Biography

Alfred Kelley was born in Middletown, CT, the son of Daniel and Susanna. Kelley studied law, and began practicing law in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1815 he became Cleveland's first mayor. He raised enough money from 1836-43 to save the state of Ohio from bankruptcy. He was involved with the creation of canals and railroads. He also served as a member of the Ohio legislature.

Alfred also introduced a bill to end the policy of imprisoning people who could not pay off their debts. He introduced important banking reform bills in the 1840s and introduced the state's first general property tax law the following year. He served as chairman of Ohio's Whig Party commission and helped William Henry Harrison become President of the United States.
