Biography

John Brown was a radical abolitionist from Connecticut. He took part in the Underground Railroad, gave land to free African Americans, and established the League of Gileadites, a group formed with the intention of protecting black citizens from slave hunters. John also believed in using violent means to end slavery, and attempted to start a slave uprising, leading an unsuccessful raid on the Harpers Ferry, VA, federal armory. He was captured and executed on December 2, 1859.
He married Dianthe Lusk in 1820, and they had 7 children before her death in the early 1830s. He remarried in 1833, to Mary Ann Day, and they had 13 children.
