Biography

He was sentenced to prison for the crime of arson in the first degree. He participated in the house burning in which Horace B. Conklin was executed. After trying to break out from prison in September 1851, he was set to be executed as well but the community rallied with petitions so Governor Washington Hunt granted him clemency. He was sentenced to life in prison and served his time in Auburn Prison. CCS wrote in 1851 to WHS that she was glad he was granted clemency.
