Biography

James Monroe Alden was born in 1817. During his early years, he held various positions with the post office. In 1845 James Alden married Alice J. Beardsley and in 1848 James and his young family settled in Auburn. While in Auburn, J.M. Alden opened a book store and eventually went into partnership with his father-in-law, John Beardsley, to open Alden, Beardsley, & Co. This firm became well established as a publisher. Alden and his family moved to New York City in 1857 and he died in Brooklyn in 1901. A card printer from Auburn named "Mr. Alden" is mentioned in a March 19, 1853 from Frances Seward to William Henry Seward. This "Mr. Alden" is presumed to be James Monroe Alden.
