Biography
Colonel Joseph Nelson Garland Whistler was born on October 19, 1822. Joseph graduated West Point in 1846 and fought in the Mexican-American War. He fought with the 8th infantry, and then later with the 3rd infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1852. During the American Civil War he was captured by the Confederates, and paroled as a prisoner of war. He fought in the Civil War again in 1863, during the Richmond campaign and defense of Washington. In 1874 he was promoted lieutenant-colonel. He retired on Oct.19, 1886 and he died in 1899. He married Eliza Cobham (nee Hall) with whom he had at least the following children: Garland Nelson Whistler, William Whistler, Margaret Whistler, Julia Whistler, and Kenner Garrard Whistler.
