"Helen Hunt Jackson (pen name, H.H.; October 15, 1830 – August 12, 1885), was an American poet and writer who became an activist on behalf of improved treatment of Native Americans by the United States government. She described the adverse effects of government actions in her history A Century of Dishonor (1881). Her novel Ramona (1884) dramatized the federal government's mistreatment of Native Americans in Southern California after the Mexican–American War and attracted considerable attention to her cause."

Biography: In 1852, Helen Maria Fiske married Edward B. Hunt in Boston, MA. The couple had two children- Murray Hunt (1853–1854) and Warren "Rennie" Horsford Hunt (1855–1865). In 1863 E.B. Hunt died experimenting with underwater vessels. In 1873-74 Helen was visiting Colorado Springs CO. where she met William Sharpless Jackson. The two were married in 1875
