Cornelius Fornet was born and died in Hungary. He graduated from the Technical University, Budapest, Hungary, in 1843, and became an engineer. From 1848-49 he served in the Hungarian War of Independence. He came to America in the 1850s. In 1852 he married his fiancee (likely Adele Fornet, who he is living with in 1860.) He settled with his family in Union, Bergen, New Jersey. During the Civil War he served as major of engineers in Fremont's Army of the West. After he was injured he was sent East, where he became Colonel of the 21st New Jersey Infantry Regiment. After being appointed Colonel he took a five-week furlough to Hungary from which he never returned, therefore his appointment was revoked. After the war he resided in Mohacs, Baranya, Hungary.
