Biography
Hector Humphrey is the son of Lucius and Lydia Cowles Humphrey (nee Chidsey) and younger brother of Julia Humphrey Seward. He started his newspaper career in the Ithaca Chronicle & News where he learned the printer's trade. He then moved to Illinois and started three different newspapers there: Kendall County Courier (1852), Kendall County Free Press (1856), and Vandalia Union (1884). While living in Oswego, Illinois, Humphrey was the Kendall County Treasurer from 1857 to 1863. He moved back to Vandalia where he was appointed postmaster in 1869 and held the position for 17 years. He married Helen Fox at Naperville, Illinois on May 22, 1851 and they had 2 children, Fred and Julia Humphrey.
