Eugene Mulligan was referenced in Clarence A. Seward's letter of December 27, 1855 to William Henry Seward. It was in the context of two other publishers, Norman C. Miller and William Orton. Mr. Mulligan married twice in his life, first to Harriet Rich and later to Sophia McCay. In 1853, a Mr. Derby left the Derby, Orton, and Mulligan publishing firm and also the Derby and Miller firm. The remaining firms consolidated into one Miller, Orton and Mulligan. They had shops in Auburn and Buffalo, and later New York City.
