Edward Granville Eliot was the only son of William, second earl of St. Germans. Edward was born August 29, 1798. He was known as Lord Eliot from 1824 to 1845. He entered Parliament in 1824. That same year he married Lady Jemima Cornwallis. They had three sons and one daughter together. From 1827-1830, he served as lord of the treasury. In 1834 he was sent to Spain where he negotiated the treaty known as the "Eliot Convention." In 1841 he was appointed chief secretary for Ireland. In 1845, upon his father's death, he succeeded to the peerage as Earl St. Germans. He became lord-Lieutenant of Ireland in 1852. He held the position of lord steward of the household from 1857-8 and 1859-66. Afterwards he became Queen Victoria's confidential adviser. He died October 7, 1877.
