Biography
Giovanni Ruffini was a political reformer, Italian exile, and novelist. He practiced as a lawyer in the 1830s. In 1833 he took part in revolutionary actions in Italy, and was arrested along with his brother. His brother committed suicide in prison, while Giovanni escaped to Switzerland and then to France. He wrote about Italy while living in exile, publishing books including Lorenzo Benoni, Doctor Antonio, The Paragreens on a Visit to the Paris Exhibition, Lavinia, Vincenzo, A Quiet Nook in the Jura, and Carlino. He returned to Italy after its reunification.
