Cecilia Letitia Underwood
Birth: 1789
Death: 8-2-1873
RelationshipsBiography
She was the second daughter of the Earl of Arran, Arthur Gore, and Elizabeth Underwood. She married George Buggin in 1815 and he died in 1825. She married Prince Augustus Frederick, son of King George III, in 1831. However, their marriage was considered null because of the Royal Marriages Act 1772 in which the royal family is required to obtain approval from the sovereign before marriage. She was styled the Duchess of Inverness after her husband's death. She was great-aunt to Lady Anna Napier, leading the Napier family to introduce William Henry Seward to her during his travels in 1859. Seward thought highly of her and wrote of her as a "good woman."
