He was a cousin of Queen Victoria and a grandson of King George III. He became Duke of Cambridge in 1850 and served for almost 40 years as the British Commander-in-Chief. He married an actress, Sarah Fairbrother, in defiance of the 1772 Royal Marriages Act.
